“Waterboarding is Torture,” Say San Francisco Activists

“AS PEOPLE GO about their shopping, we want them to know there are prisoners being detained and tortured in Guantanamo and other places around the world,” Giovanni Jackson told the Washington Report as he and other members of The World Can’t Wait stood outside Macy’s department store in downtown San Francisco Dec. 21.

“Despite statements to the contrary,” he pointed out, “our government is committing torture and our new attorney general Michael Mukasey won’t even acknowledge that waterboarding is torture.”

While passersby stopped to browse the group’s sidewalk display of orange T-shirts, buttons and flyers about military interrogations and torture, a George Bush impersonator, standing beside a likeness of a prisoner in an orange jumpsuit and black hood attached to a waterboard, facetiously assured shoppers, “We don’t torture.”
