Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) is sponsoring
a Sept. 15 rally in Montreal, Canada to End Israeli ColonialismUnite
for Justice. The daylong event will begin with an information
bazaar, with some 100 organizations participating, at 10 a.m.
at the corner of DeMaisonneuve and Guy in downtown Montreal. From
there, demonstrators will march to the U.S. Consulate, then return
to the bazaar site passing the Israeli Consulate. Some 20,000
people are expected for what organizers hope will be one of the
largest pro-Palestinian events held in North America. Additional

In observance of the first anniversary of the al-Aqsa intifada,
the Al-Awda Palestine Right to Return Coalition and the Palestine
Solidarity Campaign will hold a national demonstration in London
on Oct. 13. Participants should assemble at the Hyde Park Marble
Arch at 11:30 a.m. for a march to the U.S. Embassy, followed by
a rally in Trafalgar Square. For additional information contact

Opportunities
The Woodrow Wilson Center is currently accepting applications
for its 2002-03 fellowship competition. The Center awards academic
year residential fellowships to individuals from any country and
from a wide variety of backgrounds (academic participation is
limited to the postdoctoral level). Fellowship proposals are accepted
in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national

Nominations currently are being accepted for the 2002 Martin
Ennals Award (MEA) for Human Rights Defenders. Named after the
first secretary-general of Amnesty International, who died in
1991, the Award is granted annually to an individual or, exceptionally,
an organization currently involved in human rights work, and who
has demonstrated an active record of combatting human rights violations
by courageous and innovative means. The MEA encourages in particular
those who are working in conditions hostile to fundamental human
rights and who are in need of protection. The value of the annual
award is 20,000 Swiss Francs, to be used for further work in the
field of human rights. The application form and additonal information

Artistic Attractions
Le Temps de Vivre, an exhibition of sculptures and
ceramics by artist Khalil Bendib, will be on view until Sept.
15 at the Alliance Française de San Francisco Art Gallery,

The Washington, DC Internation Film Festival presents the 6th
Annual Arabian Sights 2001 film festival, featuring contemporary
Arab cinema, Oct. 5-14. All films (all with English subtitles)

The Smithsonian Institutions Freer Gallery of Art, located
on the National Mall, will present Turkish Cinema Now,
a survey of recent Turkish films, all with English subtitles.

A benefit concert for the preservation of classical music in
India and Pakistan will be held at the Julia Morgan Center for
