LECTURES AND SYMPOSIA
As part of a lecture series on contemporary Tunisia
sponsored by the American Tunisian Association in cooperation with
Meridian House International, Iliya Harik, professor of political
science at Indiana University, will speak April 5 on "Transformation
of the Tunisian Economy: from Socialism to Liberalism." On
April 27 Mark Tessler, professor of political science at the University
of Wisconsin, will discuss ''Elites at Independence: Vanguard or
Lost Generation?" The lectures begin at 5:30 pm, at Meridian
House International, 1630 Crescent Place, NW, Washington, DC.
The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies presents
its 15th annual symposium, "The Arab World in the New International
Order," May 3rd and 4th on the Georgetown University campus
in Washington, DC. Participants will include internationally known
specialists Patrick Seale, Mohamad Sid Ahmed and Al-Akhdar Al-lbrahimi.

presents Algerian critic and novelist Mr. Wadi Bouzar discussing

CONCERTS AND EXHIBITS
The Middle East Center is also sponsoring a concert
of Turkish classical music by the Necdet Yasar Ensemble, April 13,
8 pm, at the Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St, Philadelphia,
PA, (215) 925-9230: and a concert of traditional music of Iran,
conducted by Maestro Mohammad Reza Lotfi, April 28, 7 pm, at the

An exhibit from the Nance Museum of Kingsville, MO
concerning Saudi Arabia, currently touring US universities, will
next be shown at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA, from April 2
to 8, 1990, in conjunction with International Week Celebration.
The exhibit includes sections on oil, Islam, artifacts and history;
highlights include dependence on foreign oil, scenes from the pilgrimage
to Mecca, Bedouin jewelry, and an account of the 1945 meeting between
President Roosevelt and King Abdel Aziz Ibn Sa'ud.

The American Library Association's Social Responsibilities
Roundtable has adopted a resolution condemning Israel's "sweeping
and arbitrary censorship" and calling upon Israel "to
abide by universally recognized norms of intellectual freedom and
human rights." In a related development, since June of 1989
the Library of Congress has added the subheading "Palestinian
uprising, 1987" under the categories of West Bank and Gaza.
The fourth edition of Middle East Organizations

that deal either principally or significantly with the Middle East,
