DEAR PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:
As you’ve noted during your meetings with
Jordan’s King Abdullah, Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu,
and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, it’s time to grasp an “historic
opportunity” to make peace in the Middle East.
It’s time for our country
to be an honest broker and ensure that both sides do more than just talk about
peace. It’s time to act. Arabs will abide
by the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative proposed by now-King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
They’ve already agreed to establish normal relations with Israel in the
context of a comprehensive peace. Israel must accept an independent Palestinian
state, just as Arabs will accept an Israeli state. Both sides deserve security.
That means Israel freezes settlement construction, dismantles its illegal outposts,
withdraws from the territories it occupies—including Syrian land—opens
borders, and dismantles the wall it has built on Palestinian lands.

Let There be Peace in the Holy Land
A rabbi—one
of a group of imams, priests and rabbis led by French writer Marek Halter visiting
the besieged Gaza Strip—plays basketball with Palestinian
children at Christian Holy Family School in Gaza on March 19, 2009. The “convoy
for peace” entered the Hamas-run Palestinian territory through the Erez
crossing point with Israel. |
